About Me
The daughter of two educators, I grew up in New England knowing I wanted to be a teacher. As a teenager, my babysitting, nannying, and camp counseling jobs instilled in me a lifelong love for caring and guiding young people. My own high school education experience at Phillips Andover taught me how to push myself towards my own potential while developing habits to find balance between school and personal life.
I went on to study English at Cornell University with a focus on creative writing, and I brought that love for reading and writing to my first teaching job in New York City. I settled into 18 years of teaching at Dwight School in Manhattan, Dwight Global Online School, and the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School. In all of my classrooms, I regularly utilize techniques learned while earning my Master’s at Columbia Teachers College to help students of all abilities access the curriculum through aesthetic education practices. I used these techniques as my guide to meet students in the moment, no matter their abilities, biases, or preconceived notions of themselves as a learner.
I balanced English teaching with my roles in school administration and the field of special education. In the latter role, I loved working with students through the Quest Program at Dwight. In that one-on-one setting, I could help them develop their own strategies for meeting potential while understanding their areas of challenge.
When Dwight’s online school needed to deepen their academic support, I was tasked with creating their new Quest program and a larger school-wide multi-tier department to help students of all levels access the support that was most appropriate to them. As the Director of Quest and the Learning Support Department, I brought together students, families, and teachers to differentiate and develop personalized strategies rooted in each student’s individual learning profile. I utilized students’ IEPs and neuropsychological evaluations to gain insights and craft our approaches. I worked with my own caseload of students, helping them with any academic area of challenge from time-management to writing, Spanish vocabulary to basic chemistry, and math to reading comprehension. I was their personal academic advocate, and together we partnered with their teachers to adjust lesson plans and assignments to best fit the individual learning profile of each student.
Alongside my teaching, I’ve always worked as a private tutor, frequently helping students with their college essays, test prep, executive function, and general academic support. Throughout my journey as an educator, my tutoring work has remained a constant. I cherish the relationships I can build with students when working one-on-one, and I appreciate the ability to help each student bridge the gap between their potential and their success. Utilizing my Zoom classroom allows me to work with students all over the world, and I’ve been lucky enough to teach students in over a dozen countries and all over the United States.
When not tutoring, I run a photography business with my husband. We love exploring our hometown in coastal Maine with our kids and dog, and we return to visit our first home of NYC as often as we can.
My teaching practices are a culmination of my experiences with these organizations.
